Creatine Prevents Statin-Induced Muscle Damage

Today's Supplement Tip : Creatine
Statins are widely used by physicians to decrease LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. Muscle damage is a significant side effect, which could be particularly damaging in bodybuilders who train to failure. David Shewmon and John Craig from the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Wooster, Ohio reported that creatine supplements prevented muscle damage in patients taking statins. They speculated that statins cause depletion of muscle creatinine levels, and that creatine monohydrate supplements (5 grams per day for six weeks) prevented muscle damage by preventing muscle creatine depletion. Creatine also prevented several other cellular abnormalities related to statin therapy. Statins decrease the risk of heart attack and stroke by 40 percent or more in some patient populations. Creatine monohydrate might help make statin therapy safer and more tolerable.(Annals Internal Medicine, 153: 690-692, 2010)
