Americans spend billions of dollars on supplements and drugs that promise to burn fat. Maybe they should freeze it instead. A company called Zeltiq makes an FDA-approved device called CoolSculpting system for fat removal that is available in some physicians’ offices across the country. The device cools areas of surface fat for one hour during each treatment. Significant fat loss requires several months. Each treatment costs at least $700, which means that a complete treatment schedule will cost $3,000 or more. The validity of this technique has not been demonstrated in peer-reviewed journals, so you should cool your jets before investing your hard-earned money. (Los Angeles Times, November 8, 2010)
